About the project

Music & Arts School - Kolkata, India

In collaboration with EkTara, the Tomorrowland Foundation built a 7,000 sq ft Music & Arts School within the EkTara Learning Centre, located in one of Kolkata’s largest slum communities. This school offers young girls and women the opportunity to explore music, dance, arts, and theatre, emphasizing the importance of creative expression in personal development.

Over the next four years, the school aims to reach 5,000 children, using the arts as a gateway to self-discovery, confidence, and a brighter future beyond poverty.

Why India?

Battling gender inequality

India still has gender inequality. Women are given far fewer opportunities. Education and well-being of girls and woman are not considered to be a priority of the community. Uneducated girls from slums are prone to early marriage, child labour and trafficking. There is lack of co-curricular opportunities for the children from the slums. Woman face discrimination, abandonment, lack of financial support and earning opportunities. Most locals lack steady income and are engaged in daily labour or seasonal work in illegal workplaces or factories.

When I'm at home, I don't really see or feel it, but when you are standing here in Kolkata, India, seeing the underprivileged children getting access to school is a very emotional feeling!
